The Threshold Institute exists for one reason: to find, create, test, and deliver the next world-changing technologies in energy, water, waste, transport, and medical innovation.
We focus on the crucial point where most breakthroughs fail: the moment between invention and reality — the threshold.
And in 2026, we cross it.
Why We’re Building It
Because the world is full of extraordinary ideas that never become real.
Brilliant innovators who never get the support they need.
Technologies that should exist — but don’t.
The Threshold Institute is being built to change that.
Using a rigorous, proprietary process and Threshold Innovation (TI)™ Score, we identify the technologies that matter most to humanity’s future — not the hyped ones, but the consequential ones. Not just another app.
Then we challenge them, validate the best, and prepare them to step into the world.
We exist to help the right innovations cross the threshold into use across the planet.
The People
We are building the Threshold Institute community, comprising:
• The Leadership Team
A cross-planet group of board members: thinkers, innovators, and strategists guiding the mission and protecting the vision.
• The Project Teams
Project leaders, engineers, financial analysts, IP specialists, marketers. This crew will comprise the Project Management Office, working with external advisers and contractors to take the chosen technologies to commercialisation and public use.
• Advisers & Contractors
Specialists from around the world who contribute deep expertise where it counts.
• Stewards
A multi-generational body — people in their 20s through their 80s — who ensure the Institute stays aligned with its purpose over decades.
Stewards renew over time, carrying the mission forward long after individual leaders change.
• Educators & Youth Mentors
Creators of learning materials and experiences designed to equip the next generation with real tools to understand innovation, science, and the challenge of bringing new technologies into the world.
• Friends of The Threshold Institute
A broad global network of supporters, technologists, scientists, entrepreneurs, policy thinkers, and curious citizens who want to help identify what matters next.
We are now assembling these groups.
A Global, Multi-Generational Effort
The Threshold Institute is intentionally designed to outlast any one leader, founder, or generation.
It will be guided and renewed by diverse voices — from scientists to students, from engineers to ethicists, from seasoned innovators to emerging creators.
This is not a single-lifetime project.
It is a stewardship across decades.
The Founder
The Threshold Institute is being created by Steve Hastings, a long-time innovator, commercialisation specialist, company director, and steward of early-stage technologies across energy, water, waste and transport innovation.
Steve’s role is to initiate the Institute, set its foundation, and remain one of its key Stewards.
He is the interim CEO during formation; coordinating the appointment of the board.
The board will appoint further leaders and form the Project Management Office. The board will also appoint advisory group members.
